about

I honestly don't remember exactly when I wrote this instrumental tune, but it came into shape with the band sometime soon after the release of “Moon in Grenadine.” I believe this was one of the early performances of the piece and I don't know if we again found the group vibe and spontaneity that we had that night. I had high hopes to release a studio version of this along with 2 more movements as a suite: “Grit to the Wire”. It was to be the centerpiece of “Four Walls Bending” but as that album took form, I knew I couldn't put a fifteen minute instrumental break in the middle of it. It would have shattered the cohesiveness of the record and so I decided to abort and didn't mix the 2 tracks we had recorded during the FWB sessions.

A reel of 2-inch analog tape has followed me around from CA to France and back, and someday I may bake it and recover the tracks (it endured the massive summer 2003 heatwave in the south of France !) The 3rd movement, “Blinkers Off,” has never been performed live or released.
